Our History
A History of Openness
In 1875, a group of Protestant community members came together to create a non-denominational cemetery in Fredericton. The founders insisted that it be open to people of all faiths at a time when most graveyards were directly associated with churches.
The founders had “six conditions that were absolutely requisite” in selecting the site, including dry, easily worked soil and adequate land. They also insisted the cemetery be within a suitable walking distance, which they defined as no more than 20 minutes from the county courthouse.
They chose a beautiful, rolling, 100-acre plot on what was then known as Hawthorne Hill. In 1876, the Fredericton Cemetery Company was formed. In 1877, the first recorded interment took place.
Today, Forest Hill retains an aura of history, from the old wrought-iron gate and stone walls to the antique gravestones and monuments in the cemetery’s earliest sections. It is listed in the City of Fredericton’s Local Historic Places Register.
“The prospect from the Cemetery grounds is unsurpassed ...The Church and Town of Marysville are clearly discernible, as are the forks of the Naswaak, winding their way through lofty elms and banks of verdure, for many miles distance.” - From the minutes of the first board meeting.
The local theatre troupe, the Calithumpians, offers guided tours of the cemetery.
Natural Beauty Abounds
Forest Hill has been described as one of the prettiest cemeteries in New Brunswick for its striking views of the St. John River, well-maintained landscapes, and mature woodlands ringing the property. It is a peaceful urban park where wildlife can often be spotted. Preserving the cemetery’s natural environment and acting as a good steward of the land is a top priority.
